01 — The problem we're investigating

Every shop in the defense supply chain seems to carry the same second job: documentation.

Quality manuals that need updating. Work instructions that live in one machinist's head — and walk out the door when he retires. NIST 800-171 policies you're required to have written down before the next assessment cycle.

None of it cuts chips. All of it is mandatory. And the hours come out of the same place — yours.

Quoting carries the same weight. Before a part can be bid, someone senior spends 15 or 20 hours inside a 300-page technical data package — MIL-SPECs, flow-downs, plating callouts, GD&T tolerances — just to learn whether the job is worth pursuing. The shop that returns an accurate quote first usually sets the benchmark for the award. Almost nobody can afford to be that shop on every RFQ.

That's our working theory. Before we build anything, we're confirming it with the people who'd know: shop owners.

02 — What we're building

You already understand the approach, because you do the same thing on the floor.

The machine

A CNC machine is a general-purpose tool. It becomes your capability when someone who knows the part writes the program. The precision isn't in the machine — it's in the G-code.

The model

A language model is the same kind of tool. Generic on its own. What we're building is the program: a structured production process that takes unstructured expert knowledge — how your shop actually runs, straight from the people who run it — and outputs finished, verified documents. Human review gate on every output. Full audit trail on every document — what went in, what came out, who verified it. A traveler, for paper.

Pointed at a technical data package, that program turns a 20-hour read into a triage measured in minutes — non-standard testing, rare plating specs, and tight tolerances flagged as the cost-drivers they are. Trained on your own job cards, setup sheets, and scrap logs, it turns tribal knowledge — the feeds and speeds for Inconel that live in one programmer's head — into an asset your shop owns, and one a junior can still query the day after its author retires.

Your expertise is the part print. We're writing the program that machines it into documents.

03 — Where your data lives

None of it works if your data has to live on someone else's cloud.

The public cloud

Paste an ITAR-controlled print into a public chatbot and you've handed your machining methods to a model you don't control — and possibly logged a federal compliance violation on the way. Under CMMC 2.0, primes are trimming exactly the shops that carry that kind of risk.

Your shop

What we're designing runs where you decide: on hardware you own, inside your own walls, air-gapped if you want it — or on dedicated US infrastructure reserved for your shop alone. Your drawings, your job history, and your methods never touch a public cloud.

That boundary is positioning, not just protection. "Our AI infrastructure is air-gapped — your technical data never leaves our control" is a sentence a prime's procurement officer remembers when vendor scorecards get compared.

And you'd own it the way you own a machine tool: a capital asset on your floor, not a metered cloud bill that grows with use. Whether shops would rather buy the iron outright or have it hosted flat-rate on dedicated hardware — that's one of the questions we're asking.

What we're asking

A structured interview — an hour of straight talk about how documentation actually gets done in your shop, what it costs you, and what you've tried. No pitch. We're there to listen, not sell.

What it costs you

Nothing. No fees, no commitments, no follow-on obligation.

What partner shops get

You shape what gets built — the product is designed around what shops like yours tell us, not what we guess. And if we launch and you want it, research partners get preferred pricing on the finished product. If you don't want it, we shake hands and you're out nothing but the hour.

What we will never ask for

Controlled unclassified information. No part drawings, no program files, no CUI — that boundary holds in research and would hold in any future engagement, confirmed in writing.

05 — Where we stand on compliance

One thing worth stating plainly even at this stage: whatever we end up building will produce documentation — never a compliance verdict.

The determination belongs to your assessor and to you. That's a design principle, not a disclaimer.

Promptolution is a military veteran-owned Connecticut company. We build documentation production systems and knowledge management systems — and we're building this one in the open, with the shops it's meant to serve.
